As another year comes to an end and another birthday is fast approaching it seems that it is time for some changes to be made. Sometime in the near future I will be making some changes. Some things will stay the same but some things will be different, much different.

People places and events sometimes dictate that it is time for changes to be made. In my case it has become both necessary and a chance to modify the way things are done and to do things in a new way.

I offer this as a clue, a hint as to what is about to come:

“Be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it.”

While browsing through the internet, I came across the notice of another missing child. Another missing 3 year old child. Another missing 3 year old child taken from her bed. Another child by the last name of Lundsford.

As the days go on will we see the pattern that has been repeated with the past missing children or will the story end with this precious little girl being found safe and sound?

We can hope, we can pray, we can……

There is an underground railroad of sorts underway right now as I write this blog. All over the united states there are groups of compassionate human beings working to save prisoners from impending death. Some are scheduled to die as early as 12 hours from now. By the time this blog article spreads around the internet, an untold number of these prisoners will be executed.

Far too few, however, will be granted amnesty. These prisoners are not murders, they are not terrorists, they are not criminals of any sort. The reason they are in these prisons are because they were abandoned by those they loved. They were abandoned by those upon who they depended for food and companionship.

The reasons they are prisoners are as numerous as the prisoners themselves. And just who are these prisoners? They are those who were pets. Some were strays.

I am going to examine the stories and fates of some of these prisoners and those who were snatched from the brink of death by those humans who cared enough to step in and rescue them.

Paramount among these efforts is The Relay. It was recognized early on when the rescuers took their efforts onto the internet in places like this facebook site:

That a way to get the rescued pet to their new owners was going to be a logistical problem. Getting the pet out of the prison and to the new family required a dispatch system that would rival the largest transportation country in the world.

Every minute of every day there are volunteers, mostly housewives, who work the internet on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Craigslist, and specialized blogs to find volunteers who can transport the pet from the prison to the new family.

In future articles I hope to follow the efforts of these various groups as they work diligently to save the most loyal and loving creatures among us.

While preparing for my trip to Washington DC. on OCT, 6th, I came across a piece of equipment that I have not used for almost 15 years. It was my old Mac computer in it’s carrying case. Yes, I said Carrying case. As big as these things were, they were actually quite portable. Business travelers would lug these things along to do work on and, in some cases, go on line.

Some time back a blogger who clearly did not have a clue of the history of on line communications posted a photo of “me” on an airplane with the exact same model of machine. It was one of the few times, though she was completely ignorant of it, she came close to citing an actual fact.

I will not be taking the mac, of course, since it is a bit large to be used as carry on but instead will be taking my Samsung lap top and the trusty Torch/playbook combination I now use.

It is interesting to see how on line communications has evolved since the mid 80’s. There is even a throwback to that history as now even the Commodore64 has been reintroduced. This was Truly a portable computer and the one I had even had a built in COLOR monitor. The Commodore was certainly ahead of it’s time. I am looking forward to some of the “old time pc’s” that will be displayed at the Symposium next week.

It will be a trip down memory lane of a different sort.

There is someone on tweeter that has an account :@creepcop. I think it would be interesting of someone would start one called @sleepcop.

The idea came about when I saw a report tonight on WFTV about a Osceola County Florida Deputy who had the bad luck to have his picture taken while taking a snooze.

Osceola Sheriff’s Office Investigates Deputy Sleeping On The Job.

I went on line to attempt to find a photo of this unfortunate deputy and instead found HUNDREDS of sleeping cop photos.

While you browse the small sample of what is out there on the internet perhaps you might want to contemplate writing the Osceola County Sheriff and tell him to hire meter readers to do their police work while the deputies take their siestas.

Roy Kronk, the world’s most famous meter reader, lives in Osceola county.

If the rash of high profile cases here in Florida have proven anything it is that the licensing requirements for Private Detectives need to be totally overhauled so that we can get QUALIFIED private detectives licensed rather than the DUNCES that seemed to have come out of the woodwork during the peak activity of the high profile missing children cases that have come to light.

Rather than help, these Barney Fife bozos trounce around in the woods potentially damaging REAL crime scenes, calling in psychics, and ruining innocent bloggers and members of the press at the bidding of families who do not give a wit about anyone but themselves and their out of whack children.

Most of us in the public worry and fret about our rights being trampled on by law enforcement but do not give a second thought to those PRIVATE koppers milling around in our personal lives.

What the public does NOT realize is that private detectives have FAR MORE powers in their hands than law enforcement. They also do not have the CONSTRAINTS that law enforcement has. Private detectives DO NOT have to inform you that you are being investigated.

Since private detectives ARE NOT COPS they do not have to read you any Miranda warnings, but can submit your statements to the cops.

Private detectives DO NOT have to identify themselves in most cases when investigating you. They can also stalk you when others cannot.

What rules private detectives in Florida are required to follow are largely IGNORED and are largely unenforced.

Reporting misconduct by a private detective in Florida is also an arduous and time consuming process. In short, when a PI ruins your life, forget trying to get any justice for none is forthcoming.

It would be nice if the Florida legislature would step in and do something about the influx of unqualified clowns flooding into the ranks of Florida private investigators but I would not hold my breath.

I am about as pissed off as I have ever been regarding those who take advantage of people on the internet who can ill afford to be victimized. I had written about a particularly bad scam that victimizes the most vulnerable people using the internet to try and better themselves.

The reason I am so pissed off is not only because there seems to be nothing that can be done to convict those who engage in these scams but it is the victim who cannot afford to be placed in this position who will ultimately wind up being the one held responsible for any money lost.

Let me review how this scam came about and what happens if the victim follows through with the instructions of the person running the scam.

There was an ad posted in the Jobs section of

The title line read simply “Driver wanted for driving a car.”

As I explained in the first part of this article, the poster of the ad claims to be the daughter of a man in his late 50’s and cannot drive due to an accident. In the e-mail she sends, she goes on to explain in detail her situation:

To william murtaugh

Thanks for getting back to me. I am Mrs Becky Smith and I’m 37 years old. I am into the Sales of Sculptures, beeds, gold, and also run delivery businesses, goods carriage for my father. I lost my mother 7 years ago. My father is 54 years and cannot drive due to an accident, please i need you to be his driver. He is fun to be with, likes jokes, you will really enjoy working with him.
You can work during the weekend if you can’t afford to work Monday to Thursday (9:00 am to 4:00pm). I have booked for a VolksWagen Passat 2008 Model Car and it is at the car depot. You will drive my father to appointments, meetings and take him back home.
Please answer and provide to me all information’s listed below.
How long know have you being driving?
Do you have a valid drivers license?
Are You married?
How Much Do You Want Per Week?
How Long do You Think You can Work?
What’s your Full name?
Your Full Address with your Post Code?
How old are you? (It does not matter how old you are just asking)
Have you being in any accident? (Not a problem just asking)
I will wait to hear from you.
Do have a nice day.
Mrs Becky.

Now, this letter is odd to say the least and there were obvious alarms contained that indicated this is a phony. The problem is that there are those out there who would not catch what I did and answer this woman’s questions to see if this could be the answer they needed to get a job they so desperately need.

I thus, went ahead and sent her a letter back answering all of her questions to see what would come next.

What came next was a bit of a surprise:

How are you doing, thanks for your reply, i really appreciate it. I really want to assure you that you will enjoy working with my Father.
You will be picking him up every day Monday to Thursday and I also want to assure you that you have the job and please do not apply for another driver job. I like to pay weekly and your weekly pay will be $500. I have spoken to my father and he says he is ok with it. It is a good idea I make upfront payment of one week to you to secure you as my driver and also I will be needing your help too.
My agent’s Company will mail a Bank Certified cheque, you will cash the cheque and then deduct your first week pay ($500) and then wire the remainig fund via Western union money transfer to the car company, where i booked for the VolksWagen Passat 2008 Model Car which you will be using in driving my father.
The following of your details be needed:
PHONE NUMBER(Cell and Home Phone):
Please provide to me all information’s listed above.
I will wait to hear from you.
Do have a nice day.
Mrs Becky.

Wed Sept. 15th.

Now, right in the middle of my writing this article Ms. Smith sends me the instructions for sending the “car money.” Now pay close attention to her letter. Remember that this is supposed to be for a car in ORLANDO FLORIDA. Nowhere in the letter does she say anything about where and how to pick up the car.

I wonder why? DUH!!!!!

Here is the information to send the funds to and you must send it via western union.
Western union information:
Name: Edward Bradley
City: Cheyenne
State: WY
Zip code: 82001
As soon as you sent the money, email me the following information:
Name of Sender
Address of Sender
Zip code
Amount Sent

Mrs Becky

At the moment this woman does not know I am on to her scam and she is texting me for the information to give to “Mr Bradley” when he goes to get his money. I would love for someone to be there to “greet” Mr Bradley when he shows up.

What really makes me mad about this scam is that the woman assures the victim he has a job and TO QUIT LOOKING. This is probably the cruelest thing this crook could have done but it is only the beginning of the troubles for anyone who falls for this scam.

To the most savvy among my readers, the instruction to use Western Union to send “the remaining funds…” would indicate that this is a scam. However, what the scammer is hoping for is that someone who is desperate and not savvy to these stunts will go ahead and deposit the official looking check and considering the HUGE amount in the check, the 500.00 that is left would help them out. The victim may also think that since the check is a “cashiers check” that the funds are backed by the bank on which the funds are being drawn.

The victim would find out in short order how wrong this assumption is and would not only be a victim of the scammer but also by THE BANK.

If you go back and read the scammer’s letter you would have seen the term “certified funds” used although the check sent was a “cashiers check.” This is important since a certified check means just that. If it had been a LEGITIMATE check, the funds would have been locked in place upon the check being issued. The bank cashing the check also goes through a “certification process” before a check is deposited into a payee’s account. This is NOT the case with a cashier’s check. It is up to the payee to verify the check is genuine. The scammer did not count on me calling the issuing bank and getting the funds verified.

When I did call the bank after having my local bank fax them the casher’s check, I found out surprise, surprise, that the check is NOT valid.

Now some of you are probably asking how the victim is hit twice by this scam? The answer is quite simple. As I stated above, many victims would look at this “cashiers check” and feel that it is genuine. If the victim signs the check and hands it to the teller to run it through their fancy little scanner and accept it, they assume that the bank has approved the check and feels that it is genuine.

WRONG! Within a few days of “sending funds to the car depot.” the victim would soon find out that the cashier’s check has BOUNCED! Now this is where things get real bad for the victim.

Let me use MY bank as an example. My bank will not pre-certify a cashiers check. They will deposit the check with the usual hold against my account. If I happen to have enough money to cover the check already deposited, I would be able to use those funds. If not, I would be allowed to use half of the funds.

Now, here is the BAD news. WHEN the cashier’s check bounces, the bank comes after the VICTIM for the money. The bank DOES NOT write the check off nor are they required to. A cashier’s check is NO different than a regular check. The victim is still responsible if it bounces.

In the case of MY bank there is a hefty initial fee of at least $50.00 PLUS a 8.00 DAILY fee for every day the account remains in arrears. The VICTIM may also find himself facing charges if the check is not made good.

There is NO effort made by EITHER bank to do anything to help the victim or go after the scammer. The scammer walks away with an easy $2000.00 and the victim winds up in worse shape than ever.

Craigslist is of no help either. It took a rash of flags to get the ad removed. Every time it got flagged, the scammer would put it back, usually under a new account or slightly different wording.

There seems that little more than spreading the word about this scam can be done. The mainstream media is NOT interested in this scam. I have not seen one mention by any mainstream media outlet about this problem. They are more interested in the Orlando Magic and Avatar than the plight of ordinary citizens.

There will, by the way, be  a part three to this little saga.

While making the rounds on Facebook, I came across a post made by someone on my wall. It was a statement of loss. The loss of her life partner, her soul mate. What made this post remarkable is that it was made today, the day her life partner was lost to her.

This takes me back to January of 2008. It was then that I lost my soul mate, my life partner, my wife. One of the first things I did when I came home was to note that loss on the internet forums I was visiting back then.

This is something that is becoming more common. We are all sharing our most intimate moments both good and bad on line, with those friends we feel a closeness with even though many of us will never meet.

It is a unique sharing that is part of the evolution of the society of man in this tech savvy age. In a way it makes the lonely not alone for companionship is only a keystroke away.

My prayers to my online friends who suffer their losses for they have shared mine.
